The Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) is an English proficiency test that assesses your speaking, writing, listening and reading abilities. It is widely accepted in various countries after IELTS. Many individuals must take it in order to study abroad in the English speaking countries like Australia, or when they wish to become a permanent resident of such a country.
The aspirants to study abroad need get 46 overall scores which are equal to 5.5 IELTS bands and no less than 41 in each component which is equal to 5 IELTS bands for bachelor programmes. And for master programmes, the students need get 59 overall scores which are equal to 6.5 IELTS bands and no less than 52 in each component which is equal to 6 IELTS bands.
Neither is set to be tougher than the other. However, given the different IELTS and PTE test sections, people can find one easier than the other. Both the exams test writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. IELTS has a fixed number of questions for each, while PTE takes an adaptive testing approach.
PTE Academic takes 2 hours and 15 minutes and is a computer based exam which assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.
This part of the test is 54–67 minutes long and it contains seven different question types. It is the longest section of the test. You will be tested on your speaking and writing skills, using English you might hear in an academic environment.
This part of the test is 29–30 minutes long and it contains five different question types. Because PTE Academic is an integrated skills test, one item type (‘Reading and Writing: Fill in the blanks’) also assesses writing skills.
This part of the test is 30–43 minutes long and it contains eight different question types. The questions are based on audio or video clips, which begin to play automatically. You hear each audio or video clip once. You are allowed to take notes.
